History is replete with examples of how art can transform communities and neighborhoods. Whether it is the Soho district in New York in the 1970s, or the music scene in Seattle in the 1990s, art and artists can revitalize areas. Manchester, Vermont is a beautiful New England town that was once the home to dozens of retail outlet stores. As the nature of retail has changed so dramatically over the last few years, the core of Manchester was hollowed out with empty storefronts.
The New York Comics & Picture-story Symposium is a remarkable weekly event led by artist Ben Katchor that explores the myriad aspects of comics, its culture, and the art of the storybook. This free series has held nearly 200 weekly events since it first started. This fall alone it features talks by award-winning artists such as Sue Coe and Robert Grossman, and many other artists or scholars. On September 12th, Al Hirschfeld Foundation Creative Director David Leopold was invited to present a new talk, “Hirschfeld By The Book,” that explored Hirschfeld’s impact on the literary world.
What better way to celebrate summer in the world of Hirschfeld than to feature five of his classic summer theater drawings that were a regular feature in newspapers from 1935 to 1980? We are pleased to offer original ink on board drawings from the Straw Hat Trail that are unique in Hirschfeld history.
The Al Hirschfeld Foundation is honored to return to the Algonquin Hotel for another immersive installation of Hirschfeld artwork throughout the legendary hotel’s lobby. “The Tonys As Seen By Hirschfeld” celebrates the history of Broadway, with images of Tony-winning plays and musicals spanning the 20th century and beyond.
Last year we debuted our exclusive t-shirts of Peter Pan and What’s My Line. Today we are excited to offer 4 new styles of shirt! These four designs were made for BroadwayCon 2017.
